What can you do?

TIPS & HINTS

You can do this

Want to erase toxic chemicals from your life? These five simple tricks will make a huge difference

1. No plastic should touch your food
Plastic food packaging is one, big way that toxic chemicals end up in our bodies. Try to eat fewer packaged and processed foods to avoid this plastic. A study by the American Silent Spring Institute demonstrated that this significantly lowers the levels of toxic chemicals in our bodies. And, please, don’t heat anything wrapped in plastic in the microwave.

2. Be careful with personal care products
Whatever you rub, spray or smooth over your skin should be free from toxic chemicals. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and a great way for toxic chemicals to enter it. Look for products with an Ecolabel, they contain fewer harmful chemicals (or none at all). Some examples are Ecocert, Cosmos, Natrue.

3. Make sure your cleaning products are eco
Cleaning products may contain toxic chemicals. But, when you look for them, there’s often no sign of the potentially harmful ingredients on the label. The best solution is to use a product with an ecolabel such as the EU ecolabel or the Nordic Swan ecolabel.

4. Get out the vacuum cleaner and suck up the dust
Household dust contains many toxic chemicals. To prevent them from ending up in our bodies, toxicologists (and mothers) say we should use our vacuum cleaner more often. Clean home, fewer chemicals. Simple.

5. Wash your hands
Washing your hands? Yes, it sounds a bit simplistic but just washing your hands can remove chemicals from them.  According to a Columbia University study, for instance, it is a very effective method to reduce exposure to harmful flameretardants.
